Why does using AlcedoCore require a license?
In the open-source community, many projects are used by (big) companies to make money while the creators earn little to nothing for their work. With our license approach we want to change that by adding a required donation. This license does not buy any priority, hours, or other services. And once AlcedoCore becomes profitable, we will decide how to split the revenue among the open-source projects we depend on.
What if I just want to test/experience AlcedoCore before applying for a key?
You can let us know when applying. We will give you a key without question, but we will keep in touch, with a maximum of 3 months of testing.
How do I get a license key?
Fill out the application form on our Apply for a License Key page. We review your information and issue your key within one business day. You then set it as the ALCEDO_LICENSE_KEY environment variable on your AlcedoCore instance.
What counts as revenue or funding for the tiers?
Annual recurring revenue (ARR) or total external funding raised, whichever is higher. Companies under $100K in either qualify for a free license key.
How is "per project" defined?
A project is a single AlcedoCore setup. This includes the development, staging, and testing instances. License keys are per-project, not per-seat.
How does renewal work?
License keys are valid for one year. We send you a reminder one month before expiry. To renew, submit a new application with updated revenue and project information, and we issue a new key. A license management dashboard for self-service renewal is in the works.
What happens if my license key expires?
You have a 30-day grace period after expiry. During that time, we work with you to renew. After the grace period, the instance will stop serving requests (enforcement is coming in a future update - for now, we rely on honest reporting). No matter what happends, your data will remain intact.
What about the hosted option?
Managed hosting is on our roadmap. It will be a fixed monthly price for infrastructure resources. Self-hosting under the BSL with a license key will always remain available.
